Spotlight on Erin Maioriello

Spotlight on Erin Maioriello

We are excited to share this month’s #AAFSpotlight feature. Erin is a Graphic and web design strategist for Cedar Crest College. She also owns her own Design Studio .

What is a typical day like for you?

I feel grateful to be able to say that no two days at my job are typical. My position requires the wearing of many hats and on any given day I can go from designer to printer to event photographer in the span of a few hours. It keeps the job interesting and fun!

What do you know now that you wish you knew at the start of your career?

Rules are meant to be broken. Be different, stand out, break the grid and start something new! Do what you love and you will never have to work a day in your life!

Is Comic Sans really that bad?

I feel bad for the guy (or gal) who designed it. Can you imagine being “that guy” who designed Comic Sans? Yikes!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I would love to still be working in Higher Education. It allows me the freedom to be creative while being involved in every aspect of a project, from inception through completion. Being able to own your work is very rewarding. I would also love to bring more design awareness and involvement to my campus. Although not a design school, art and design still play a big part in things that happen at Cedar Crest. I would love to share that with interested students and maybe even start a design club!

Currently, how big is the logo? Do you see it getting bigger? The client wants to know.

Bigger isn’t always better. Spread the word!

About Erin:

Art has been a part of my life in one form or another for as long as I can remember; drawing, painting, ceramics, jewelry making …I tried it all. I still experiment with various materials and techniques as much as possible. I graduated Kutztown University in 2001 with a BFA in Communication Design and I have been fortunate enough to do what I love everyday since! My design background is as diverse as my portfolio; I have gone from Pharmaceutical Advertising and Web Design, to Entertainment Marketing and most recently, Higher Education.

I am a lover of typography and bold color schemes, call me retro, vintage, funky, artsy or bold, I embrace every opportunity to create art and design that speaks to me while inspiring others. I am a nerd at heart who loves going to horror conventions, listening to 90s hip hop and playing board games! I have two beautiful cats whom I adore and an amazing group of family and friends who encourage, support and inspire me everyday!
